US Virgin Islands Charlotte Amalie Colors and symbols on North American flags
The three biggest countries have three very different styles. Canada has a red maple leaf between two red bars, introduced in 1965. The United States flag shows 13 stripes for the original colonies and 50 stars, one for each state, in its current form since 1960. Mexico pairs a green, white and red tricolor with an eagle on a cactus eating a snake, a symbol from Aztec legend.
Central America shares a motif. Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua use blue-white-blue bands from the old United Provinces of Central America, while Costa Rica and Panama follow their own styles. In the Caribbean, the flags are bold: Jamaica is the only national flag without red, white or blue, using a gold saltire on green and black. Haiti uses blue and red with its coat of arms on a white panel, Dominica displays a purple parrot, and the Dominican Republic places an open Bible at the center of its emblem. Barbados shows a broken trident, and Belize features two figures and a ring of leaves. Further north, Greenland has a two-tone circle on white and red, and Bermuda shows a lion holding a shield.
Oldest and newest flags in the region
Haiti (1804), Mexico (1821) and Cuba (1902 in its current form) have some of the oldest continuous designs in the region, and the Stars and Stripes dates to 1777, though it has been updated many times as states joined. Caribbean independence in the 1960s to 1980s created many newer designs, such as Barbados (1966), the Bahamas (1973), Grenada (1974) and Belize (1981). Canada replaced its red ensign with the maple leaf only in 1965, and Greenland adopted its own flag in 1985.
Several territories use British blue ensigns, with the Union Jack in the corner and a local badge: Anguilla, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands. Dutch territories, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, have designs of their own.
Look-alike flags people confuse
Cuba and Puerto Rico are the best-known pair: both have five stripes and a white star in a triangle at the hoist, but Cuba has blue stripes and a red triangle, while Puerto Rico reverses them to red stripes and a blue triangle. Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua all share blue-white-blue and are told apart by their emblems and stars. Trinidad and Tobago is easy to spot by its black-edged diagonal stripe, while St. Kitts and Nevis also uses a diagonal band, in black and yellow.
