What the flag of Grenada looks like
The flag of Grenada has a red border on all four sides, with three yellow five-pointed stars along the top edge and three along the bottom edge. Inside the border, the field is divided by the diagonals into four triangles. The top and bottom triangles are yellow, and the triangles at the hoist and fly are green.
In the center is a red disc with a yellow five-pointed star. On the green triangle next to the pole is a small nutmeg, shown with its split husk and the red covering around the seed, which is where the fourth color on the flag, a reddish-brown, comes from. Most elements of the flag have a commonly given meaning:
- Red stands for courage and vitality, and it also represents the harmony and unity of the people.
- Yellow stands for the sun, warmth and wisdom.
- Green stands for vegetation and the agriculture of the island.
- The seven stars are explained as the seven parishes of Grenada. Counting the dependency of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Grenada is usually described as having seven parishes.
- The nutmeg shows that Grenada is known as the "Isle of Spice". The island is one of the world's largest producers of nutmeg and mace.
The red, yellow and green colors are also found on many other flags of Africa and the Caribbean, because they are the Pan-African colors. Grenada is a Caribbean country, not an African one, but most Grenadians are descended from Africans brought to the island during the colonial period.
History of the Grenada flag
The island was inhabited by Indigenous peoples when Columbus sighted it in 1498. The French settled it in the 17th century, and it passed to Britain in 1763. Under British rule, Grenada used the British Blue Ensign with a local badge.
Grenada became an associated state of the United Kingdom in 1967 and gained full independence on 7 February 1974, which is now celebrated as Independence Day. The current flag was designed by Anthony C. George, a Grenadian, and it was first raised on that day.
The flag has remained the same since independence. Grenada is a member of the Commonwealth. Compare it with other flags in the region on the flags of North America page.
