Yemen, the only country that starts with Y

Yemen is in West Asia, bordering Saudi Arabia and Oman, with coasts on the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. Its capital is Sana'a. It has a long history, including ancient kingdoms in the region once called Arabia Felix.

The flag has three horizontal stripes of red, white and black. These are Pan-Arab colors, and the same red, white and black stripes appear on the flags of Egypt, Syria and Iraq, which add an emblem or script.

North Yemen and South Yemen unified in 1990 to form the current country. Like Q, the letter Y has only one country. Its coast on the Bab-el-Mandeb strait sits on one of the busiest shipping routes between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Fun fact: Yemen's flag is one of the simplest in the world, with no emblem at all.
