Which country's flag is this?

Tips for recognizing state flags

More than 20 state flags are a state seal on a blue field, which is why this quiz feels hard. Read the seal for clues: text, a date or the name of the state will often give it away. Look at the state flags before you play.

Some flags are easy because they break the pattern. Texas has a single white star on a blue vertical band with white and red stripes, and New Mexico shows a red sun symbol on yellow. Ohio has a pointed swallowtail shape, Maryland a bold heraldic pattern in black, gold, red and white, and Colorado a large C around a gold disc. Alaska has the Big Dipper and North Star on blue. Newer designs, like the ones adopted by Utah, Minnesota and Mississippi, are also fair game. Hawaii is the only state with a Union Jack on its flag.

How the quiz works

Each question shows one flag and four answer buttons. Pick one: the right answer is highlighted, and if you missed, the quiz tells you which state it was and links to its page. Your score is shown while you play, and the final result appears after the last flag. There is no timer. The 50 flags come in a new random order every time, so you can replay as often as you like.

How to learn the 50 state flags fast

Split the flags into seals on blue, which are the majority, and everything else. For the seal flags, read the text and the date, then learn each state's main image. Learn the exceptions first: Washington is the only green flag, Ohio is the swallowtail, and Hawaii has the Union Jack. Texas looks like Chile's flag, but Texas has the blue band along the whole hoist. Do five or ten states at a time, then replay the quiz. Use the list of all state flags to check the ones you miss.

Frequently asked questions

Is it 50 or 52 states in the USA?

There are 50 states. Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico are not states, so they are not counted. This quiz covers exactly the 50 state flags. Puerto Rico's flag is in the North America flags quiz, and the national flag appears in the world quiz.

Can I name all 50 US states from their flags?

It is hard, because many flags show a seal on a dark blue field. Read the text on the seal, and learn the distinctive flags first. The quiz gives four options per flag and shows the right answer after each question, so you can learn as you go.

What are the 50 US state flags?

All 50 flags are on the US state flags page at /us-states/, each linking to its own page. This quiz uses those same flags, shown one at a time in a random order. You can study them there first, then play the quiz to see how many you remember.

Which US state flags look alike?

Many show a state seal on a blue field, so they are the most commonly confused. Texas also resembles Chile's national flag. The quiz is easiest for flags that stand out, such as Ohio's swallowtail shape and Washington's green field.
