What the Hong Kong flag emoji means

The Hong Kong flag emoji shows a white bauhinia flower with five stars on a red field. Residents use it on 1 July, the anniversary of the 1997 handover that created the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It also appears for dim sum, Cantonese pop, the Dragon Boat Festival and travel to Victoria Harbour. Hong Kong has its own entry on emoji keyboards even though it is part of China.
