- Libya: horizontal red, black and green stripes, with a white crescent and star on the black band. The black band is twice as wide as the red and green ones.
- Malawi: black, red and green stripes with a red rising sun on the black band.
- Martinique: the Rouge-Vert-Noir flag, widely used in the territory.
Flags that include these colors along with white or yellow fall into two groups.
Pan-Arab flags: Jordan, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Syria, Palestine and Western Sahara. These combine black, white, green and red in stripes with a triangle or vertical band.
African and Caribbean flags: Kenya (black, red and green with a Maasai shield), South Sudan (with a blue triangle and yellow star), Zambia, Zimbabwe, Dominica, Guyana, St. Kitts & Nevis, Vanuatu and South Africa.
Why do red, green and black appear together?
The four Pan-Arab colors, black, white, green and red, come from the flag of the Arab Revolt of 1916. Each color is linked to a historic Arab dynasty or era, and the palette spread across the Middle East and North Africa. Most of the Arab flags on this list use them.
On the African side, black stands for the people, red for the blood of the independence struggle, and green for the land. Kenya's white borders are for peace, and Malawi's rising sun marks the dawn of freedom and hope for the continent. South Sudan, independent since 2011, uses black, red, green and white with a blue triangle for the Nile.
Libya's tricolor goes back to its 1951 independence, and was brought back in 2011. The crescent and star are symbols of Islam.
