What the Scotland flag emoji means

The Scotland flag emoji shows the Saltire, a white diagonal cross on a blue field, for Saint Andrew. It is used for football, rugby, golf and Scottish heritage. St Andrew's Day is 30 November, Burns Night is 25 January, and Tartan Day, 6 April, recalls the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath. Scotland is a subdivision flag, so it works differently from country flags.

How to type the Scotland flag emoji

On iPhone, open the emoji keyboard and search for “Scotland”. Gboard on Android works the same way. On a Mac, press Ctrl+Cmd+Space and type the name. On Windows, press Win + . and search, but expect a plain black flag. Scotland is not a regular country flag made of two letters.
